Reports, reports and more reports on the future (for good and for bad) of journalism

If you're just getting back from a long family vacation or returning to the start of a new academic year, then you've got plenty of reading to catch up on. This summer, there were several interesting reports from various corners about the state of news and the future of journalism. These are each well worth digging into if you're interested in taking a hard look at where we need to go next.
  • The most recent of these was posted by Vin Crosbie, a new media consultant and critic, at his

For those who haven't seen this yet, the Daily Californian, the student-owned, independent newspaper at University of California at Berkeley has decided to stop publishing on Wednesdays due to a drop in advertising revenue. Editor-in-Chief Bryan Thomas told a local Bay Area newspaper:
"We're making cuts now, it's a one-year fix to get us through the next year. We're focused on the long-term…

Is free software the model for journalism's future?

Over the Idea Lab blog, Christopher Csikszentmihályi of MIT's Center for the Future of Civic Media submitted a posted earlier this month called "None of Your Business Model." He wondered if rather than focusing on new business models, whether journalism should look to the free software and open source movements for ways to sustain reporting in the future:
"Whatever t…

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the ping. I am the program manager for the replacement of the entire newsroom application suites, wires, scripts, audio, media, and of course workflow. My groups work touches on every aspect of workflow as well as the technical side and yes, workflow and building an engine around it is one of the most challenging parts of the job since we have several shows all with different ways the get information. NPR did a world wide search for Newsroom systems and went with DAVID systems for core systems and expanding their product suite. My software development group built the workflow engine, as well as the face of the rundowns which are smart enough to adapt to breaking news, rolling coverage, breaking formats, the list goes on. If I were to guess how much we programmed and how much DAVID systems did I would gets 50/50 since the applications that tie into ingest/billing/messaging/reporting/HR systems don't exist off the shelf.

I will talk to my Boss the CIO about blogging for nextnewsroom as I am on the Newsroom 2.0 counsel and would be writing somewhat representing NPR. Baring any objections, I would love to.

Yeah, I'd love to. I'll try to write something this week. It's kind of hectic here, so maybe towards the end of the week. :-)

In Nova Scotia. We were recently there for vacation. That's at Brier Island, the most western point of the province.

Hey, I need to call you sometime to talk to you about a possible story. What's a good time to call you?

The multimedia training was fantastic, totally inspiring. Since the training I've been creating my own sites and multimedia. Check out www.sanjaybhatt.com and www.aajaseattle.org. It's not the world's best, but it's pretty good for a novice web programmer.

The Times is going to go through a reorg in the next 4 months. I think we'll be stronger for it. But it's tough here just like it is everywhere else. We should catch up by phone one of these weekends. How are you?

Chris, I can't find your post http://www.providentpartners.net/blog/ to the comment about programmer journalist. Sorry, meanwhile I'm telling my journalism (t) friends about you. One guy Scott Gillespie, Editorial Page Editor of the Star Tribune. I'm sending him a link to this site.

He is a great guy, smart and, like you has a passion for his craft.

All the best, I'll be on the look out for the post

Chris, nice presentation at the NewComm Forum. I am sure more will be at the Society for New Communications Research www.sncr.org.

I blogged about your presentation and I have a commenter that asked a question about the jobs that will be part of the next newsroom. Whould you mind seeing if I answered it correctly and giving your more detailed and accurate answer? thanks
