Since 1992, I've wrangled one of the largest contributor-run archives and digital libraries on the Internet. I also teach in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communications, lately about blogging and virtual communities and social capital. Additionally I teach in the School of Information and Library Science at UNC.
On Valentines Day 2008, Scribner's will release Best American Erotic Poems: 1800 - Present; I'll have a poem in there.
Share your thoughts about how the newsroom of the future should be different . (And if you do, please post a copy of your answer in the forums).
I fully expect the newsroom to vanish as more reporting is pushed to the streets and becomes more mobile. Just as tech companies work more in officeless or co-working situations with a few key people in a central building, news orgs will again rely more and more on stringers and freelancers and people in the field rather than people in the office. Editors, and fewer of them, will direct the news flows which will come increasingly from new sources, many of those direct feeds in need of editing and selection and tagging.
