This is a great, difficult, important question. Honestly, I've been out of the business for quite a while, but watching from the other side -- as a communications consultant -- I am well aware that both newsgathering and news reporting have changed greatly in recent years. It is important to give reporters access to information, but not just volume of information -- figuring out how to help journalists sift through the abundance of material to find what is most relevant or important. Obviously, finding ways to promote both swiftness and accuracy/balance/perspective is essential.
