Perhaps by reinventing the roles of journalists to news ombudsmen. Then, it still opens the 'gates' to news submitted by members of the community, but the 'gatekeepers' would be tasked with an experienced and objective process of weighing the facts and telling the story. (Perhaps this is not extremely different for some journalists, except from an editorial perspective, the determination of "news value" gets transferred to the other side of the gates...)
