The TOUCHWALL might be good innovation in newsroom. So I think it will work here. Since it will track new updates and information then it will be a great help to the community. Anyway, you might hear the news about MJ’s death right? Every room kno...

Day 1: Future Of News And Civic Media Conference @MIT

I'm writing this as Day 2 is getting started. But I wanted to reflect on a few things that came up yesterday.

The big moment of the day came with the afternoon announcement of the 2009 News Challenge Winners. Check out the list of winners. I was particularly excited to see several important mobile-related projects get the nod. But one of the most high-profile projec… Continue

Chris, I have to say great job! I see the Duke conference is set. Could we maybe do one on the west coast (bay area) around the time of ONA 10/1-2?

Wondering if there's another conference coming up... Just joined your "Next Newsroom" since media issues are always on my mind. I read your column in the (actual, crisp, old-fashioned) paper all the time -- but love how you're engaging with the future in mind...

Hi Chris,

I suspect you didn't have high school journalism teachers on your list when you were thinking who might join NextNewsroom, but I think we might be building a state-of-the-art media center (and perhaps small conference facility) at Palo Alto High School and the things your colleagues here are talking about are right up our alley. We're not under the same business pressures, but I think there probably are lots of overlapping architecture ideas. If you know of anybody locally that you think I simply must talk with, please pass on a referral. Looks like I just missed your most recent conference. Too bad.

Anyway, drop a line if you think it's worth us talking.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the ping. I am the program manager for the replacement of the entire newsroom application suites, wires, scripts, audio, media, and of course workflow. My groups work touches on every aspect of workflow as well as the technical side and yes, workflow and building an engine around it is one of the most challenging parts of the job since we have several shows all with different ways the get information. NPR did a world wide search for Newsroom systems and went with DAVID systems for core systems and expanding their product suite. My software development group built the workflow engine, as well as the face of the rundowns which are smart enough to adapt to breaking news, rolling coverage, breaking formats, the list goes on. If I were to guess how much we programmed and how much DAVID systems did I would gets 50/50 since the applications that tie into ingest/billing/messaging/reporting/HR systems don't exist off the shelf.

I will talk to my Boss the CIO about blogging for nextnewsroom as I am on the Newsroom 2.0 counsel and would be writing somewhat representing NPR. Baring any objections, I would love to.

Kerry
