The University's current proposal is to move The Chronicle from its current West Campus location to a new media center on a new Central Campus. How critical is a particular location for The Chronicle and why?
I think the newsroom should remain on main West. The Flowers location was ideal. The office was close to the Bryan Center, the Allen Building, the CI, the main quad, and other places where students gathered frequently. It was helpful to be just a few minutes away from most of the classrooms on West Campus. Obviously, staff members now can interact with each other online (and could avoid having to take a bus to Central), but I would expect that the paper's staff would become less cohesive if the newsroom is moved to Central.
If the Chronicle is situated in a new media center on Central Campus, and that is the only way to get the great space and room to grow, then that seems like the best solution to create solid infrastructure for the future. The opportunity to help shape what the Chronicle's offices look like for the long term is an exciting opportunity that shouldn't be missed.
If people are concerned about losing easy access to places on Main West, what about setting up a small satellite office on Main West? For that matter, you could have one on East as well. Then you would have the ability to have reporters in high-traffic locations for breaking news needs, but then you could have the bulk of editors and production staffing in the main office on Central.
Will accommodations be made for late night transportation for staffers? In days gone by, people who lived chose to live on Central generally had access to a vehicle. But now the tables are turned. If the office is on Central, the staffers who live on West may not have readily available transportation. Hoofing it at night sadly is not a safe idea anymore. Will having a vehicle become a de facto prerequisite for any serious staffer?
I like the idea of having satellite offices. In fact, with all freshmen now living on East, having an office there could be useful in recruiting and retaining new staffers.
